Adventures in Amateur DIY: Navigating Home Improvement Without a Compass

At this point I’ve owned this house for about 5 years… well 5 years on the 22nd of this month, and never really done any serious decorating. Haven’t hung many things on the walls, haven’t painted anything and certainly haven’t done anything serious. But that’s changing.

This weekend I am attempting to do a “feature wall” in the guest room. Why? Well because ultimately I have grand plans of doing one in the home gym/ dining room and wanted to first try it out on a wall that few people see incase I royally screw it up. Having moved the bed out of the room and drawn on the wall to figure out exactly the correct layout for the MDF, I can’t go back now. I also need to get it finished by Friday because I head to NYC and the house sitter sleeps in there so again, must get this done. I feel confident that it will look good and that in of itself is a problem given the Dunning-Krueger effect absolutely being a thing. But to hell with all of that, its just cutting angles to the right length, using a nail gun, spackle, caulk, and paint… how bad could it be?

Anyway, I’ll update this post with before and after photos, or if it goes terribly enough, I’ll just purge this post and act like it didn’t happen. Anyway, wish me luck as I am determined to do the entire project myself.
